Pin-stripe calathea, or Calathea ornata (also known as a Prayer Plant) has beautiful, pink to white pin-striped large leaves with reddish purple undersides, and long stems that can grow up to 24″ tall and wide. Native to South America, they prefer a humid, warm space with bright light. These plant grow best in bright indirect light, with no direct sunlight, as it will likely burn the leaves. The soil should be kept regularly moist (but not wet), cutting back watering a bit in the winter, just so that the top layer is dry to touch. They grow best in a well-draining potting soil and can be re-potted every couple of years as they become root bound, moving it to a size 1-2″ above its current pot. These plants thrive in humidity and will appreciate having the leaves misted during the spring and summer months.
