Botanically called Aspidistra elatior, the Cast Iron Plants earned their nickname due to their resilience. They are categorized as herbaceous perennials (in tropical locations) and belong to the lily family. This Milky Way variety is hard to come across but we have them here at Heeman’s!
The Cast Iron Plants are fully capable of dealing with direct light or poor lighting, as well as low air quality. This hardy plant thrives in very hot, dry summers and is not easily damaged by cold winters. Insects also seem to leave it alone, and it very rarely is bothered by disease of any kind. It’s considered a pretty indestructible houseplant, which makes it perfect for first-timers or for a gardener with a brown thumb. This sturdy, long-lasting plant can be used in areas where all else fails, and it will live happily without too much effort from you!
The large paddle-shaped leaves are a dark shade of green with dots of white, like the stars in the Milky WAy adoring each leaf. This plant is slow-growing, only producing a few new leaves a year. The main advantage of this is that it won’t outgrow the location you choose for it for many years!
